Brief adaptation-induced plasticity of perception of number

Exposure to dot patches of high or low numerosity produces a shift in the perceived numerosity of subsequently viewed patches, biased away from the numerosity of the adaptor patch. Here we show that substantial numerosity adaptation can occur with very short periods of adaptation, as short as 1 s (compared with the typical 30–60 s adaption). This brief adaption produces large effects in perceived numerosity that last over extended delays (10–20 s) between adaptation and test, with measureable effects persisting for hours after initial adaptation. The adaptation effect was found to be both retinotopic, remaining strictly in retinotopic space after a saccade, and spatially specific, with numerosity judgments at multiple locations within the visual field able to be differentially modulated simultaneously. Similar experiments with brief adaptation to spatial frequency (texture density) revealed much smaller effects, providing further evidence for the independent analysis of numerosity and texture density, and suggesting that numerosity activates processes that are particularly susceptible to short adaptation. These results are of interest both in that they implicate a highly plastic mechanism for numerosity perception, adaptable within 1 s, and that they suggest a quick and efficient paradigm for use in clinical testing of numerosity.
