Global grouping overrides point-to-point disparities

Vilayanur S Ramachandran, Jeremiah I Nelson

Received 13 February 1975, in revised form 10 November 1975

Abstract. This note presents some forgotten gestalt demonstrations in which grouping and configurational effects determine local disparities. Two new stimuli which Ramachandran devised indicate that grouping effects will overcome spatial proximity and will define local disparity. Together the figures show several ways in which contour neighborhoods can determine perceived disparity. Do we wish to lump all such effects together in the term globality?
